Alfa Romeo unveils the Alfa 4C Concept

After its international public debut at the Geneva Motor Show last April, the Alfa 4C Concept will be exhibited at the 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt next month in a new and exclusive ‘fluid metal’ exterior colour that dynamically enhances the smooth and sinuous lines of the car.



In recent months the project has been refined and enriched with technical contents to enhance the dynamic excellence of the Alfa 4C Concept. Vehicle weight is confirmed at around 850kg, the engine delivering more than 200 bhp and a power to weight ratio less than 4kg per HP – traits worthy of a true ‘supercar’.







The Alfa 4C Concept showcases the formula of the two-seater, rear-wheel drive coupé with its central engine, a length of approximately 4 metres and a wheelbase of less than 2.4 metres. These dimensions on the one hand emphasise the Alfa 4C Concept’s compact attributes, whilst on the other accentuate its agility.



The Alfa 4C Concept uses technology and materials derived from the 8C Competizione – carbon, aluminium, rear-wheel drive – and technology from Alfa Romeo models currently on sale: the 1750 turbo petrol engine with direct injection, the ALFA TCT twin dry clutch transmission; and all the best of Alfa’s DNA technology, obviously including the Alfa DNA dynamic control selector.





Also on display on the Alfa Romeo stand will be an Alfa Giulietta equipped with the next generation ALFA TCT twin dual dry clutch semi-automatic transmission. This innovative transmission ensures greater driving comfort and a sportier feel than conventional automatic gearboxes, combined with improved efficiency and lower fuel consumption levels.



The Giulietta with the ALFA TCT transmission will be available with a choice of two engines : the 1.4 TB MultiAir 170 bhp engine and the 2.0 JTDM-2 170 bhp diesel engine.



Alfa Romeo’s sportiest compact car, the MiTo will showcase two new engines – a revolutionary 0.9 TwinAir TB 85bhp and a new 1.3 JTDM 85bhp . The award winning TwinAir engine developed by Fiat Powertrain, develops 85 bhp at 5,500 rpm and torque of 145Nm at 2,000 rpm. By using the Start&Stop device and the smart alternator, the MiTo Twin Air engine has the lowest value of CO2 emissions with petrol engines in its class :98g/km.

About the author

Jim Kartalamakis was born in Salonica, Greece. He went to Toronto, Canada, to study electrical engineering, and at 23 bought his first Alfa, which was where it all started. 30 years later, Jim still fondly remembers the life and times of the ARCC (Alfa Romeo Club of Canada). He returned to Greece in 1979, and ever since has had only one make of car, albeit different models – from a 1750 GT through to an Alfetta GTV, a 75 3.0 to, currently, another 75 3.0 and a 1.8 Turbo. For many years Jim was a technical writer for several car magazines, and the official Alfa Romeo technical manual translator in Greece.

A significantly revised MiTo range will shortly become available through Alfa Romeo’s 52-strong UK dealer network.

The Italian sporting car manufacturer, which is enjoying a strong and sustained sales surge in 2011, has just released details of the new range – all of which are designed to make owning an Alfa easier and more attractive than ever, with lower entry prices combined with higher standard specifications, and a new congestion-busting sub-100g/km CO2 version.

The MiTo sports compact range has been streamlined from 17 versions to nine, with both Turismo and Lusso trim levels being replaced with the Sprint; entry level versions are now known as Progression, and Distinctive and Quadrifoglio Verde versions replace Veloce and Cloverleaf.



Prices have been reduced across the range, and now start at £12,250 OTR for the entry level 1.4 8v Progression, rising to £17,955 OTR for the 1.4 TB MultiAir 170bhp Quadrifoglio Verde.

In terms of enhanced specification, Distinctive (formerly Veloce) and Quadrifoglio Verde (Cloverleaf) are both enriched with additional equipment, including Cruise Control, Sports pedals and rear parking sensors.


Three new engines become available: 1.4 8v 78bhp (available in Progression and Sprint, replacing the 1.4 16v 95bhp unit) for lower emissions, superior MPG and Start&Stop as standard; 1.4 MultiAir 105bhp (available with Sprint or Distinctive trims) for superior power, torque and MPG (compared to the 1.4 16v 95bhp engine); and the new congestion charge/tax busting 1.3 JTDM-2 (Sprint only, replacing the 1.3 16v 95bhp unit) which produces a spritely 85bhp and just 95g/km of CO2, which means free travel in the congestion charge zone, together with free road tax and first registration fee. Business users can also claim 100 per cent capital allowance in the first year of ownership.

Finally, the Alfa MiTo will become available in Metal Bronze, a colour entirely new to the Alfa range, having been previewed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. On Progression and Sprint versions, it can also be chosen with new Sprint Bronze upholstery.
