Serena crushes Czink
Defending champion needs less than an hour to reach the third round
Defending champion Serena Williams wasted little time in reaching the third round of the US Open after a 6-1 6-1 over Hungary's Melinda Czink.
The world No.2, who is chasing her fourth title at Flushing Meadows, needed just 53 minutes to brush aside the outclassed Czink under the lights at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Williams, who is also the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, was in complete control throughout and did not give Czink a single break point.
The American was guilty of just nine unforced errors, while Czink's day was summed up as a double fault sealed the win for Williams.
And Williams, who will play Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the third round, was delighted with the victory especially after she had struggled against the Hungarian in their first meeting.
"I think I kept my unforced errors low tonight," Williams said.
"I definitely made some adjustments. I played her a few weeks ago for the first time so I knew her game better today.
Tough
"She's a really good player so I was really pumped coming out here and I knew I had to play really good."
Former champion Kim Clijsters threw down a marker as she toppled 14th seed Marion Bartoli.
Clijsters, back in action after retiring in 2006, needed a wild card for the event, however she is proving good value for it.
The Belgian came back from a set down to overcome Bartoli 5-7 6-1 6-2 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Clijsters, though, is refusing to get carried away with her good run of form.
"Especially at the start of the tournament, you don't focus on eventually winning the tournament," she said.
"My next match is against Kirsten Flipkens, which is going to be tough. That's all I'm going to focus on right now. I don't want to think too far ahead."
Daniela Hantuchova, the 22nd seed, also needed to bounce back after losing the first set.
The Slovakian finally came out on top 5-7 6-2 6-1 against Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky
